The red fox is usually around 10 – 15lbs with a body length ranging from 20-25″ when fully grown. The gray fox is slightly smaller in size. They can be found all over NY ranging from rural to suburban areas. A fox litter usually averages between 4-6 and are born usually between mid-March through April. Foxes are active throughout the day and night. Most activity is observed during dawn and dusk.
Foxes are opportunistic feeders. Their diets mostly consist of voles, bird eggs, mice, rabbits, insects, and local fruits and berries. Some foxes have been known to carrion, small livestock, and cats. If you have noticed a fox out during the day, it is not necessarily sick or has rabies. The fox is mostly likely feeding more to keep up with the demands of its pups.
