The raccoon can be as large as 12-36 pounds. It is an opportunistic eater with a diet that ranges from insects, frogs, worms, fruits, berries, nuts, fish, eggs, vegetables from a garden, bird seed, pet food and of course garbage. Raccoons are a rabies vector species.
Raccoon Litters can range from 1 kit to 5 kits. Most kits are born from March through May, however a female that breed late in the year may have a litter as late as August. The kits can be heard chirping in an attic or other area of the home and often the noise they make is mistaken for birds.
Raccoon’s are great climbers and can use the corner posts on the side of your home as a ladder way up to your roof. From there they can gain access to a crawlspace or attic, or other areas of the home through a number of different ways. The raccoon may gain entry through the soffit,or a uncapped chimney. Attic vents/fans also provide entry way for raccoons.
Raccoon’s are mostly nocturnal. However a raccoon may be observed throughout the day. This does not mean that the raccoon is rabid. It is most likely a healthy female that needs extra food to provide nourishment for her young. A raccoon may also be showing signs of canine distemper that can be mistaken for rabies.
